Visual Literacy

The quote in the box at the beginning of the article by Debbie Abilock is very powerful..."A photographer who is out to persuade you of his "truth" will make choices to support his view rather than reveal the truthfulness of the moment."

What necessary skills that need to be taught to our 21st century learners: visual literacy and critical evaluation -- whether it's photography, websites, commercials, magazine articles/ads (like airbrushed models!)

  1. I have two pictures of Britney Spears - they speak volumes! Will share later - but visual literacy and critical evaluation are crucial!

  2. I think this is something that many overlook but is becoming more important due to digital manipulation. Before when we looked at a photograph we often assumed that it was a window into the truth of the moment. We forgot to consider that the photographer selects his images just as a writer selects words. Many felt that since a photo captured the moment they were less biased. Now with manipulation being the norm the evaluation of the motivation and the image itself is more common.

  3. Motivation...that's a good word. What is the creator's motivation. That should be an easy concept for students to grasp...and an important one to discuss. I already do that with my kids at home watching commercials. I specifically ordered FLOAM (a stupid product that is marketed to kids and makes it look like they can create all these cool art project)...I ordered it just to prove to my then-10 year old that all things are not what they appear on TV. With our 3 4-ounce little cans, we didn't make anything except a mess. It was a good lesson for the low, low price of just $9.99 though!
